I retired in September 2024 after a 40+ year career as an actuary working in the life insurance industry. It was a great profession for me as I was able to use my mathematical background to solve business problems. I felt lucky to have stumbled into this career after graduating from the University of Wisconsin. A highlight of my career was giving professionalism presentations to over 1000 actuaries for their career development, based on my personal experiences in difficult situations.
One of the things that draws me to cycling and this bucket list adventure is that I’ve always been motivated by finishing or accomplishing something. Riding across the US has been a distant dream of mine until now. I look forward to starting at the Pacific Ocean in San Diego and to successfully reach the Atlantic Ocean in St. Augustine, FL. And I should have some great stories along the way.
My personal theme for this trip is summed up by the song ‘Til You Can’t by Cody Johnson. If you haven’t heard this song, go listen to it. “If you got a chance take it, take it while you got a chance…’Til you can’t…”
For those of you that don’t know me that well, my wife Margaret and I have been married for 39 years. We have one son, Doug, who is married to Emily, and they have two children, Avery (4) and Henry (2). They are all the loves of my life!
